The short answers

Questions people ask about croquet in Birmingham.

Is there a croquet club in Birmingham, Alabama?

Yes. The Birmingham Croquet Club is a golf croquet club based in Birmingham, Alabama. We play on lawns around Birmingham and hold play days, pop-up croquet events and lessons, and members travel to tournaments around the Southeast.

What is golf croquet?

Golf croquet is the fast, social version of croquet. Two sides take turns playing their balls through six hoops on a lawn, one stroke at a time, in the order blue, red, black, yellow. Every hoop is worth one point, and the first ball through a hoop wins that point for its side. A full game is 13 points, and the first side to reach 7 wins. Here’s how to play.

Do I need experience or my own equipment to play?

No. There’s no experience needed, no equipment to buy and no pressure. We teach you the shots, there’s a mallet here for you, and you’ll be in a real game the day you start.

How do I start playing croquet in Birmingham?

Post a hello in the club’s Facebook group, come to a play day or pop-up from the events calendar, and we’ll teach you the basics: running a hoop, clearing an opponent and the tactics that decide a match. You can also join for free first and have your own membership card right away.

Where and when does the club play?

Play days, pop-up events and lessons are listed on the events calendar and announced in the club’s Facebook group. We play on lawns around Birmingham, and the club’s pop-up program brings croquet to neighborhood lawns, such as the Cross Creek pop-up in August 2026.

How much does it cost to join the Birmingham Croquet Club?

A couple membership is $165 a year and a junior membership, for players 25 and under, is $40 a year. A paid membership covers twelve months, with no automatic charges.

A full membership at the Birmingham Croquet Club includes USCA membership: entry to USCA-sanctioned tournaments, an official handicap and Grand Prix ranking, the Croquet News magazine and the official rule book. Club membership at $15 doesn’t include it, and suits social players and anyone who is already a USCA member.

Is there a public croquet court in Birmingham?

Not yet. Croquet has a reputation for country-club gates, so the Birmingham Croquet Club is working toward a public croquet court in Birmingham where anyone can walk on and play. Every new member gets the club a little closer. Read about the public court.

Yes. The club’s pop-up program brings a full-size court, hoops, mallets and balls, sets up, teaches and hosts. Ask in the club’s Facebook group and we’ll talk it through.

Does the Birmingham Croquet Club play in tournaments?

Members travel to tournaments across the Deep South, including the Grand Cup every spring at The Lakewood Club at the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama, but the club doesn’t really run tournaments of its own. For tournament questions, including who’s eligible, we point people to the United States Croquet Association. See tournaments and results.
